White post-consumer yarn project, the power of choosing the right partners: Renaissance Textile & Les Tissages de Charlieu

Resistance to change is a concept deeply rooted in the human being and in spite of this, today there is unanimity in the need to modify our way of consuming and producing textile products.

Textiles consumption is slowly changing, day by day people are being convinced that we cannot maintain the current model in which we are generating huge quantities of textile waste every year. Everyone is more aware about the fact of reusing and consuming recycled products, although this is not enough.

All the players in the Textile Industry should focus their efforts in being more environmentally friendly. Collaboration between all the supply chain stakeholders is a must.

At Vilarrasa we are fully committed with long term relationships with our partners and today we are happy to share our collaborative experience in producing our bleached post-consumer recycled yarns.

Two years ago, Les Tissages de Charlieu (LTC), a French weaver and confectionist pioneer in producing recycled clothes, asked us to develop post-consumer recycled yarns. Our first step was to solve how to source the correct raw material, in terms of colour, composition and fibre length. The response came from another French pioneer, Renaissance Textile, a new innovative company born to be referent in post-consumer recycled fibre sourcing. They worked hard to ensure us a constant volume of white raw material, without contaminants and with a fibre length that let us feed up to 30% in our blends.

Having the sourcing solved, we were testing and learning exploring different blends and spin setups, delivering small batches to be weaved by LTC. After many test, working in a cooperative way, sharing our results, we achieved our first goal: a 100% GRS white yarn, made with 30% of post-consumer raw material, that can be woven at standard loom speeds.

Currently we are continuing exploring new post-consumer recycled yarns, proud to have the possibility to collaborate with LTC and Renaissance Textile. Without them this wouldn’t have been possible.

If you want to be part of the change, please contact us, we will delighted to share our experience and knowhow with you.

Together we can do it !
