Everything you need to know about post-consumer recycled yarns

Using recycled raw material is the best option to optimise resources, as we minimise the impact of our activity on the environment. We have to do this by guaranteeing that the final product will be equivalent to the one we made with virgin raw material.

We consider as post-consumer recycled yarn those that have been manufactured from raw material that has been used by the consumer and which is given a “second life“, reusing it and using it again to make new yarns.

If we think about the wide variety of textile products currently on the market, we can sense the most important problems in the production of post-consumer recycled yarn:

– Quality sourcing: The quality of a post-consumer recycled yarn is largely determined by the raw material used for its production, it is of vital importance to ensure as homogeneous a composition of the raw material as possible.

– Getting the quantity needed: Manufacturing post-consumer recycled yarn has to be a way to be more sustainable and also has to be sustainable for the spinning mills, that is why the volumes of material to be recycled have to be high in order to have the right cost structure.

Fashion has changed a lot in recent years and different fibres have been incorporated into fabric compositions with the aim of making clothes lighter, more elastic, more durable, but that adds a lot of complexity when it comes to recycling.

On the other hand, there is still work to be done to implement effective channels to recover used clothing, in the same way as was done in the past with cardboard or plastic.

Nowadays, the manufacture of post-consumer recycled yarn has to be considered in specific projects, having very clear the quality and quantity of raw material, as well as the use that will be made of the post-consumer recycled yarn. At RESPIN we work for different customers and projects, tailoring the highest quality post-consumer recycled yarn, giving a sustainable alternative to our customers with yarns of equivalent quality to the ones they used to use.
